Easy Biscuits and Gravy Recipe

Joe

Here's a classic Biscuits and Gravy recipe that’s perfect for a comforting breakfast:

For the Biscuits:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into small pieces)
  • ¾ cup whole milk or buttermilk

For the Sausage Gravy:

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (pork sausage works great)
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ cups whole milk
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • Optional: a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne for heat

Instructions:

Biscuits:

1. Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

3. Cut in Butter:

  • Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4. Add Milk:

  • Gradually stir in the milk or buttermilk until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.

5. Shape the Biscuits:

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead a few times. Pat the dough to about ½ inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter or a round glass to cut out biscuits.

6. Bake:

  • Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Sausage Gravy:

1. Cook Sausage:

  • While the biscuits are baking, cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart as it cooks, until browned and fully cooked through.

2. Add Flour:

  • Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir it in. Cook for 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.

3. Add Milk:

  • Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue cooking and stirring until the gravy thickens (about 5-7 minutes).

4. Season:

  • Season with salt, plenty of black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes or cayenne for some spice. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Serve:

  • Split the warm biscuits in half and generously spoon the sausage gravy over the top. Serve immediately.

Enjoy your hearty Biscuits and Gravy breakfast!
